Snap Judgement USC/Cal

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

The Trojans looked to come out and make a statement, and boy did they.  I said in my preview the unfortunate loss of Stafon Johnson meant more Joe McKnight and that was the undoing of the Cal Bears. He was the best back on the field today for sure, even with Jahvid Best in the building.

Matt Barkley didn’t have a great game. No touchdown passes, and didn’t look really sharp.  But anytime you are in a game with Kevin Riley, odds are you will still be the best QB in the game.  This kid is so shaky.  He hasn’t played well in quite a while, and I see no end in sight.

Oh, and let’s give a ton of credit for the performance of the Trojans D to the return of Taylor Mays.  He looked great out there, and you can just see when he’s on the field the whole defense plays better.

Where does Cal go from here?  Far from the polls that’s for sure.  Hopefully never to be seen again.  Riley will do his best to be sure of that, and at the same time keep Jahvid Best off anyone’s lips in discussing the Heisman.

Where does USC go from here?  They should move up in the Polls and remain on course to win the PAC-10, assuming they don’t choke against another mediocre conference opponent.

Snap Judgement Oklahoma/BYU

Snap Judgment Oklahoma/BYU

Before I get into what Sam Bradford’s injury could mean to the Sooner’s season let me say that having re-watched this game, I’m not sure BYU wasn’t going to win it regardless. That is a very solid football team, very well coached and led by a Senior QB and a future NFL millionaire at TE. I tip my hat to Coach Mendenhall and his Cougars. They handled themselves with class and dignity and earned that win. And their aggressive play especially on defense was really impressive.

Now moving ahead what is to happen to Oklahoma? Well it’s an AC joint injury on a quarterback’s throwing shoulder. My guess would be Bradford is cleared to in 3 weeks and assuming there’s no re-injury playing at 100 percent in 5. Good news I guess. So what happens next? Well fortunately they get Idaho State at home next week which should be a nice recovery week for the team. Then Tulsa comes to town, which they can win even without Bradford. But then you circle the trip to Miami. It wouldn’t shock me if they don’t leave Bradford on the bench for this one, just because It’s a non-con and they want him 100 percent for the Oct 10th home stint with Baylor. Then the week after that is the Red River Shootout. Landry Jones is going to be a great OU quarterback probably next year but this year, I’m not sure they can navigate to that October 17th game 4-1. If so, they will be straight in line to still win the Big 12. But it’s not going to be Bradford’s health that needs to be monitored during that stretch. No, there are two far more serious issues. One is the play off the offensive line and the other the wide receivers. Both units looked embarrassing for stretches last night. A team like Oklahoma should be able to “re-load” as they say when his with losses. The Sooners lost their top 3 wide outs and 4 starting offensive lineman, and looking at last night’s game, they were not prepared for that in any way. If it’s me, I don’t rush Bradford back, because to be honest, until his line and wide outs start playing better, he’s going to be limited in what he can do.

Anyone who knows me knows I am a Sooner fan for life. Am I devastated by tonight’s loss? No. Bradford’s injury? Nope. How about the crappy play of the offensive line and the wide outs? You bet I am. I am going to send Bradford and Germaine Gresham both get well cards and I’m going to send Bob Stoops Playing the Offensive Line: A Comprehensive Guide for Coaches and Players (Paperback) by Karl Nelson. It’s a good read.

Snap Judgement Oregon/Boise State

Friday, September 4th, 2009

After watching last nights game, I realize that I was wrong.  It doesn’ t happen often, but it does happen.  Oregon is not as good as I thought.  This isn’t to say anything negative about Boise State.  They are a good football team.  And that blue turf mojo is no joke.  But I guess I’ve been living with the memory of that last game I saw Oregon play in, where they looked like world beaters.  But last night they were the beatee not the beater.  Boise State came out more aggressive with a much better gameplan, and in spots more talent.  In a year where Oregon had a clear shot at a PAC-10 title, they laid a massive egg.  They are going to tumble in the next poll and rightfully so.  Oregon’s oline is a glaring weakness of this team after being a strength last year.  All things considered it wasn’t a good night to be a Duck fan.  Oh and at this point I expect Boise State to run the table straight to a BCS Bowl yet again.

On to the punch.  I could go on some sort of tirade here, but I won’t.  Blount is a thug and he’s gutless and I hope he gets kicked off the team.  He got his feelings hurt because he lost and he made a horrible error in judgment.  An error I hope he is punished for.  Ducks fans, save me your excuses.  You are hurt because your team looked awful in a loss, and you are scared because if Blount is gone so is your year. Big whoop.  What Blount did was wrong and the act of a coward.

Opening weekend in college football! Victory Screech!

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Am I the only one who feels like a heroin addict who finally got a fix because football is back? I didn’t think so. Every week I am going to give you college football fans a pack of games that promise to be a lot of fun and a great matchup. This week I am going to give you a pack of 4 for the start of the season as well as a few quick hits.

First big game of the opening weekend and I do mean first game is a huge matchup. Oregon travels to the blue turf in Boise to take on the Broncos. On paper Oregon is the better team, but in the past 6 years the Broncos are 38-1 at home. That can’t be a coincidence. Both these teams have BCS aspirations but this game means very different things for each team. If Boise State loses, their chances of making it into the BCS will be a steep climb even early in the year. They will slip in the polls and have lost to the best team they have on their schedule. If Oregon loses, they will still have home games against Utah, Cal and USC. A one loss Oregon team that wins those looks much better than a one loss Boise State team that loses this one. I am going with talent over any sort of magic juju the Broncos have at home. Oregon wins in a shootout.

Next up Virginia Tech versus Alabama

This is a huge game for Alabama because if they have any hope of winning the SEC they can’t have a non-conference loss. Virginia Tech is the best team in the ACC but a win like this would cement that. The game is being played on a neutral field in Atlanta so the gratuitous home field advantage these two teams get in their respective stadiums is negated. Alabama has a ferocious middle to their defense with Mount Cody at DT and LBs Don’t’a Hightower and Cory Reamer. On the other side of the ball things are not so rosy with key losses along the offensive line and at quarterback. Virginia Tech on the other hand return 19 starters including quarterback Tyrod Taylor. I know Alabama has a lot of cache’ being in the SEC and Va. Tech is part of an ACC that is much maligned. But I think Tech is just a better football team early in the year. This game happens in November I give the edge to Alabama but opening weekend I am calling for Tech and their gritty defense to pull out a close low scoring game.

Next up Oklahoma versus BYU

There’s a part of me(probably the OU fan part of me) who almost didn’t include this game, because it’s not unlikely that OU runs away and hides with this win in the first half. But the game is in Arlington, where some UT fans will show up just to boo the Sooners, and let’s not rule out that BYU is ranked 20th. BYU will score, probably late in a comeback, but I think they will keep it close long enough to keep it interesting. This will be a game where OU can work out the kinks in 4 new offensive line starters but Sam Bradford should have his way with the BYU defense and makes this game not close late.

Next up is game of the week Georgia at Oklahoma State

The “at” above is huge for this game. If this game weren’t being played in Still water I’d have a hard time giving the Pokes much of a chance. Their defense isn’t particularly stout particularly in terms of a pass rush, and their offensive line is a bit of a work in progress. But they have the 3 headed monster of Zac Robinson at QB, Kendall Hunter at RB, and Dez Bryant at WR. On the other side, Georgia lost it’s veteran starting QB and Rb to the NFL. Early in the season it’s all about what teams are playing the best together and you have to assume Oklahoma State’s more veteran group of skill players have the edge. The one advantage(well two) that Georgia has is, their offensive line is veteran and really good. If they can control the game and allow Georgia to put together some long scoring drives it’ll keep that threesome off the field. Their second advantage is their front 7 is probably stout enough to keep Hunter from killing them on the ground. But I’m not sure they have a cornerback who can run with Dez Bryant and there’s not doubt Robinson will find him early and often. I predict a huge game for the Robinson/Bryant combo and Oklahoma State gets off the snide(0-3 against Georgia lifetime) and wins comfortably.

A few quick hits

Game to not watch of opening weekend-Charleston Southern at Florida-The Gators starters would probably get a better workout going against their own no. 2’s. And if their no. 2’s playing CS they’d be 3 touchdown favorites. Pass this one buy unless you are a sadist or just really curious to see how Florida’s third team looks.

Small School spotlight

(8) Chadron State(1-0) at (5) Pittsburg State(1-0)

Anytime you can get two of the ten best teams in the country squared up, you know it’ll be good and this game promised to be a slugfest. The Gorillas have completely re-tooled their offense but answered a lot of questions about their future last Saturday laying the wood to Central Oklahoma 42-13. UCO was ranked in the top 20 at the time. But Chardon themselves took care of business with a convincing opening win over University of Mary(ND). These two teams squared off last year and it was a battle right to the wire with the Gorillas edging them 38-31. The Eagles are coming to the Jungle this year for revenge.

Player to watch

Case Keenum, QB Houston-Lots of big claims this year about breaking records in passing offense and I expect them to take games like this one against Northwester State to pad their stats. Keenum could have a massive game.

Most hyped game that won’t matter

Miami at Florida State

I know I know tons of tradition. But irrelevant programs are irrelevant. I will Tivo it and break it down like I do all the games, but as a fan who used to drool at the showcase of athletes in this game, it can be nothing but disappointing to see where these programs are now.

Hey Morons…

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Sometimes I just have to vent a little and tonight is my night to vent. There’s already one preseason game in the books, and the whole league will have played one by the end of the week, and we have 5 first round picks still unsigned. I honestly don’t know who to blame more for this the players or the agents.
First is Michael Crabtree, who’s crying because he was taken after Oakland rookie WR Darrius Heyward-Bey but feels like he’s a better player so he should make more. Michael are you on some new allergy medication? I lobbied for you for the Heisman two years in a row. I have you as my number one overall prospect, and I felt like you got robbed when you fell as far as you did in the first round. But for crying out loud, you are playing on a bad team and need the reps with your pack of mediocre QBs if you hope to put together any kind of a season.
Oh and Andre Smith, WTF are you thinking? You should be thanking God that you were drafted as high as you were, after the train wreck of an offseason you had. You have no leverage. Pick 5(Mark Sanchez, QB New York Jets), and pick 7(Heyward-Bey) are signed. You sure as Hell can’t make more than a QB like Sanchez, and you can’t make less than DHB, so what’s the problem? Get your lard ass into camp. The Bengals took a chance on you, and you are letting them down already.
Ok, let me take a breath. Let’s think about where we are with this and what is happening.
First you have Smith, who’s stuck and just needs to sign his contract and get on with his career before he and his moobs are too far behind to catch up.
But the other 4 guys are a little different. They are basically picks 8-11, and they are all lumped together waiting on the first guy to flinch. No. 8 pick Eugene Monroe is sitting there not wanting to make a deal too soon, because No. 9 pick BJ Raji still isn’t signed. Once Monroe signs it should cause a bit of a chain reaction on down. Same for Aaron Maybin who was taken by 11 by the Buffalo Bills. Knowshon Moreno the 12th pick by the Broncos is signed, so Maybin has his minimum, but there’s no way in Hell he’s signing with Crabtree threatening to hold out all season, unless he gets more money than DHB signs. IF that happens, that will throw the entire slotting off, and allow Maybin and even Raji and Monroe more money. It’s a huge mess all started by one Red Raider.
But outside of the financial aspect of this and let’s not kid ourselves, it’s the second contract an NFL player gets that sets him for life, these guys are costing themselves so much more than money. It’s costing them a shot to develop as a great player. I’m not going to be overly dramatic and say they’ll never recover as players because that’s not true. But for this season, a prolonged holdout particularly for a skill player could cost them this year, and will almost certainly hurt their rep with fans. And morons the fans are what drive you through your career.
So listen morons sign your contracts, buy your big houses and most importantly get on the field and start showing your fans you are worth all the trouble.
