Scouting Snapshots-David Amerson

Written by Curt Popejoy on 08/07/2012

These are my preseason scouting reports.  They are meant to just lay a foundation for where these players are going into the 2012 College Football season.  Obviously when I do final scouting reports on these players after the season, things will change.  No guarantees they will change for the better, and I do my best to be objective and pragmatic.  You all may take that as being negative, but if I like a guy I say so, and if I don't, you'll hear that too.

David Amerson, CB North Carolina State

Height-6' 3"

Weight-195lbs

Positives

-Freakish size and length
-Impressive ball skills
-Tremendous body control
-Dominant in zone coverage
-Excellent quickness and on field speed
-Strong technical player in coverage
-Elite anticipation

Negatives

-Man Coverage raw
-Size might make him stiff in backpedal/turn
-Average in run support
-Poor tackler
-Lack of targets

2012 Outlook

It's not common that the best player at a given position is so much better than the rest, but that certainly describes Amerson.  His combination of size, anticipation, leaping and ball skills paired with supreme confidence makes him a brutal matchup for any team's best wide out.  The problem with this year will be I can't imagine teams are going to throw his way very much, so matching last season's stats.  For me, I want to see him play some man coverage, see if he can stay low in his backpedal, turn his hips and shadow wide outs.  And I really want to see him improve on his tackling, because in the NFL, he's got to be able to get in and stop the run, and tackle some big wide outs and tight ends.  Regardless of what happens this year Amerson is a high first round pick in 2013, but a second elite season could cement him in the top 5.
