Scouting Snapshots-Taylor Lewan

Written by Curt Popejoy on 09/03/2012

These are my preseason scouting reports.  They are meant to just lay a foundation for where these players are going into the 2012 College Football season.  Obviously when I do final scouting reports on these players after the season, things will change.  No guarantees they will change for the better, and I do my best to be objective and pragmatic.  You all may take that as being negative, but if I like a guy I say so, and if I don't, you'll hear that too.

Taylor Lewan, OT Michigan

Height-6'8"

Weight-305lbs

Positives

-Huge wingspan
-Nice athleticism
-Finishes in the run game
-Great intensity and never takes a play off
-Pure left tackle prospect
-Excellent balance, solid base

Negatives

-Doesn't play with elite strength
-Let's defenders get in on him
-Needs to use his hands better
-So tall, he gets a little sloppy(use those knees)
-Must improve play diagnosis

2012 Outlook

One game into the 2012 season and I can see that the notes above(from last season) he's better.  I really want to see him play stronger, because it seems like lots of these really tall long guys in the NFL get pushed around by these squatty powerhouse types.  Teams don't like to rush his side, but when they do, I want to see Lewan get his assignments quickly and correct.  Has a chance to be the top OT in the 2013 NFL draft.

2012 Notes-Lewan's play against Alabama was the highlight of the game.  Head Coach Nick Saban sent a multitude of pressures at the Wolverines and Lewan was ready.  Did a much better job with his hands, keeping the Crimson Tide defenders at bay.  I was hesitant to put Lewan in my preseason Top 32, but my next update, he's going to be way up the list.
