Scouting Snapshots-Jake Matthews

These are my preseason scouting reports. They are meant to just lay a foundation for where these players are going into the 2012 College Football season. Obviously when I do final scouting reports on these players after the season, things will change. No guarantees they will change for the better, and I do my best to be objective and pragmatic. You all may take that as being negative, but if I like a guy I say so, and if I don't, you'll hear that too.

Jake Matthews, offensive tackle Texas A&M

Height-6'5"

Weight-305lbs

Positives

-Great size
-Strong in run support
-Finishes blocks
-Nice punch
-Sets up quickly
-Moves down the line well

Negatives

-Not a great athlete
-Pure right tackle prospect
-Falls back to the cut block too often
-Gives up when play works away from him
-Gets run on the edge at times
-Needs to improve overall technique, still raw

2012 Outlook

Matthews and fellow Aggie Luke Joeckel form one of the best tackle tandems in the country, and in a draft class that is deep with talent but minus that elite player, Matthews has a shot to work his way into the first round. He plays nasty, never takes a play off, and is fearless. I want to see more polish, do better at stopping those elite edge rushers, and work on NFL blocking more and less of the drop and cut college stuff. I think as a RT he's an excellent prospect, and could cement himself in the top 15 with a great season.
