Heisman Frontrunners: Week 2 Edition

Two weeks into the college football season, and I suppose it's time to offer up the 5 guys I think are the frontrunners for the Heisman Trophy.  Probably no real suprises here, except maybe one.

1. Kellen Moore QB Boise State - My preseason pick and I am sticking with him.  Showed all the skill and poise expected of him in the preseason.  Only one game in the books, but I expect his stats to go through the roof.

2. Terrell Pryor QB Ohio State - Won a big game against Miami and put up huge numbers doing it.  I don't consider him the most outstanding player in the country, but if they win out, he'll almost certainly be the reason and that gets him the gold.

Best of the Bunch: Wide Receivers/Tight Ends

Wide outs/Tight Ends has become increasingly more challenging to rank for a couple of reasons.  One is the fact that fewer and fewer college teams utilize the tight end in the passing game like they should.  Another is these spread offenses.  Spread passing games can mask minimal talent with the scheme, and spread running games can misuse talented players.  I used to put much more emphasis on the tight end and penalize teams that didn't have a receiver at the spot, but while there are still some teams that do it on my list, I won't automatically discount a team that doesn't.  One thing I do demand is some top end talent.  So when I look at the 4 teams I think are the real elite, the University of Houston and their wonky pass offense won't be a part of it.  I am just not sure you couldn't plug in the 3rd best wide out from any of the teams i

Best of the Bunch: Quarterbacks

Last year, I lumped my quarterbacks and running backs together for my best of the bunch articles, but this year, the groups are so different I felt like it was only fair to both groups to give each their own breakdown.  Obviously, when I look at the best quarterback unit in the nation, I have to give some consideration to depth, but let’s be honest.  The best quarterbacks in the nation are the reason their team wins or loses and as much as we’d like to say that the backups can come in and the teams won’t miss a beat, we know it isn’t true.

Super Sophomores for 2010

Last season we were able to see a near record number of Freshman have impacts on their teams success.  This is all well and good but being able to repeat that success and better yet, improve on it, is what will be key.  These players have set the bar very high, and here's a player from each conference that I think will push it even further in the 2010 season.

My way too early Heisman Predictions...

When I look at the guys I think deserve a shot at the Heisman Trophy I typically put them in 3 groups.  First are the obvious front runners.  Guys who play in bigtime programs, and have the hard throbbing endorsement of the media and their names will rape our ears all season long.

Second is the group of guys who are poised to win it, but get almost no love preseason from the masses so they either can’t get their name out there in time (Ndamukong Suh), or don’t get enough pub at all (Ryan Mathews).

The third group is that “nukka what?” group.  I call them that because every time I mention their name in the Heisman discussion, someone says “nukka what?”

My frontrunners

Big Ten/PAC-10 Expansions. What it all might mean

I've said for years, if a conference is going to whine and moan about the BCS system and lobby for a playoff the first thing the conferences must do, is determine their champions the same way.  That means either all BCS conferences go to 12 teams and have a true conference championship, or all the conferences with title games would have to do away with them.  Not bloody likely.

In the past week we've heard the Big Ten(11?) is actively pursuing a 12th team for their conference.  Getting a 12th would be they could divide into divisions, and have a Big Ten Title game, which would be a huge get for their TV Network.  I fully expect the Big Ten to find themselves a team to join in sooner rather than later.  But what team?

Snap Judgement-Championship Week Edition

You all know I can watch college football for hours at a time and I do just that. And I do my best with this site to be objective in terms of my rooting interests because I'm watching it primarily to scout players.  But I love college football.  Not like I love my family, but after my family, it's right up there.  I can become so engrossed in a game, that my kids are concerned for my well being.  This weekend, we have several of those moments both good and bad.  Let's get after it and talk about all the big news that was Championship weekend in college football.

College Football Preview-Championship Week Edition!

Welp, it's Championship week, and that means some really great things, and some not so great.  First the great.  There are going to be some of the best football games you will see all year.  Probably some of the most exciting finishes we've seen, and kids playing harder than they have all season. The Heisman Trophy will be sorted out, the BCS Bowls will be decided and the Bowl picture as a whole will come into focus.  Some kids will be heartbroken.  Others will be riding high.  It's what is great about college football and why for me, it's the king.

But it's not all perfect.  After this week, they amount of games is going to take a big dip and it basically becomes a waiting game for the big bowl games.  In the meantime I have to deal with crappy NFL football and all these other sports on talk radio.  Like my man Charlie Brown says, "Good Grief".
