Ben Morgan's 1 Round Mock Draft - 4/24/2009

Written by Ben Morgan on 04/23/2009

1.1 Detroit Lions Matthew Stafford QB Georgia
It starting to look like the Lions are locked into Stafford. My feeling is it's the wrong pick, they should go for the franchise LT in Jason Smith but...

1.2 St Louis Rams Jason Smith OT Baylor
...Detroit's loss is St Louis' gain. An instant replacement for the departed Orlando Pace, St Louis can start rebuilding the franchise around a new LT. Marc Bulger will be very happy.
Full Profile >>

1.3 Seattle Seahawks (from Chiefs) Mark Sanchez QB Southern Cal
This is not so much a pick for Sanchez as a reflection of I think a couple of teams may try to trade up ahead of the Seahawks in order to draft Sanchez. If the Seahawks are as in love with Sanchez as they appear to be it could even be them that trades up one pick to make sure no-one else can.

1.4 Kansas City Chiefs (from Seattle) Aaron Curry OLB Wake Forest
Which would leave a Happy Chiefs organisation with an extra pick and a guy who will instantly help upgrade an underacheiving D. I think Curry would be the guy they select at #3 if they have to pick there.
Full Profile >>

1.5 Cleveland Browns Michael Crabtree WR Texas Tech
There could be some trades involving the Browns current playing staff but even if there isn't Crabtree is a much needed guy. Cleveland has D issues and either Orakpo or Raji would be a good pick but with Stallworth as good as gone and Edwards persona non grata...

1.6 Cincinnati Bengals Eugene Monroe OT Virginia
The Bengals need a pass rush more than an OT but Monroe should really be gone by now and it enables them to dangle Levi Jones in a trade. With a couple of 3rd round picks they can look for pass rush later.
Full Profile >>

1.7 Oakland Raiders Darrius Heyward-Bey WR Maryland
"Random Al" Davis holds the key to how the rest of my mock falls. Al's in love with triangle numbers... so with a truly Davislike shock pick I've gone for Heyward-Bey over Jeremy Maclin.
Full Profile >>

1.8 Buffalo Bills (from Jacksonville) Andre Smith OT Alabama
I can see a trade down here instead, perhaps getting Buffalo's #11 overall and their 3rd rounder. Rumours are Buffalo may trade up to get Andre Smith but Brian Orakpo could be a possibility as well.
Full Profile >>

1.9 Green Bay Packers Michael Oher OT Mississippi
They need a pass rushing 3-4OLB threat but Michael Oher is probably too good to pass up given the loss of Tauscher and the age of Clifton.
Full Profile >>

1.10 San Francisco 49ers Brian Orakpo DE Texas
I'm skeptical about this pick because superficially Orakpo reminds me of Manny Lawson who's been a bust. They both excel in the weight room and in drills... But I feel like Orakpo will be a much better pro and should be able to handle that rush 3-4OLB role.
Full Profile >>

1.11 Jacksonville Jaguars (from Buffalo) B.J. Raji DT Boston College
So this becomes the Jaguars pick instead. Jeremy Maclin is still there (thanks Al) but I think the signing of Holt and the surprise of still finding B.J. Raji available is going to tip the scales in the big man's favour
Full Profile >>

1.12 Denver Broncos Tyson Jackson DE LSU
Denver's new 3-4 Defense is all well and good but at present they don't have those Aaron Smithlike guys on roster. Tyson Jackson is one of them.
Full Profile >>

1.13 Washington Redskins Aaron Maybin DE Penn State
They still need a pass rusher, they missed out on the QBs and OTs at the top of the drat but they can still get a good pass rusher to play opposite Andre Carter. Everette Brown should be the pick here but I've read they like Maybin better
Full Profile >>

1.14 New Orleans Saints Malcolm Jenkins CB Ohio State
Some people say RB will be the pick here but you have to look at what Pierre Thomas did last year, 9TDs and a 4.8ypc says they stick with him for 2009 at least. They have a weakness at CB for sure. Their pass rush last year was dreadful too though.
Full Profile >>

1.15 Houston Texans Clay Matthews OLB Southern Cal
This is a bit of a guess on my part. It's something of a need position and Matthews uncle does work for the Texans... I dunno. I'd prefer Cushing myself and a RB is a possiblity too to team with Slaton.
Full Profile >>

1.16 San Diego Chargers Knowshon Moreno RB Georgia
Rumours about LT's future are still around so being able to grab the best RB in the draft and continue that tradition must be appealing to them.
Full Profile >>

1.17 New York Jets Josh Freeman QB Kansas State
They do need a Quarterback
Full Profile >>

1.18 Denver Broncos (from Chicago) Robert Ayers DE Tennessee
Could potentially play OLB or DE in their 3-4.
Full Profile >>

1.19 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Vontae Davis CB Illinois
They could use some help on the D-Line but with most of the top prospects there gone I think they could look at CB
Full Profile >>

1.20 Detroit Lions (from Dallas) Eben Britton OT Arizona
They should've drafted Smith or Monroe. They get Eben Britton here who is really not bad consolation at all.
Full Profile >>

1.21 Philadelphia Eagles Brandon Pettigrew TE Oklahoma State
This is a big need for them and Pettigrew should deliver everything LJ Smith only threatened to.
Full Profile >>

1.22 Minnesota Vikings Jeremy Maclin WR Missouri
Tough one to call. Maclin is superb value here but I'm not sold on how well he fits with Minny... I like the idea of them using him out of the backfield and motioning out wide ala Reggie Bush in NO.
Full Profile >>

1.23 New England Patriots Rey Maualuga ILB Southern Cal
Bruschi is old enough to be my dad Mayo looks awesome, lined up next to Maualuga they'd look impenetrable
Full Profile >>

1.24 Atlanta Falcons Brian Cushing OLB Southern Cal
I think they'd like something on the DL but Cushing could go anywhere
Full Profile >>

1.25 Miami Dolphins Everette Brown DE Florida State
Someone to play opposite Porter and eventually replace his production.
Full Profile >>

1.26 Baltimore Ravens Percy Harvin WR Florida
WR is a huge need, Harvin may not be the guy they covet but he should be a nice weapon for Flacco's big time arm.
Full Profile >>

1.27 Indianapolis Colts Peria Jerry DT Mississippi
Their run D sucked big time last year, they improved down the stretch but I'd call improving it their biggest to do.
Full Profile >>

1.28 Buffalo Bills (from Carolina via Philadelphia) Larry English DE Northern Illinois
They desperately need help in their pass rush. Larry English is a guy that could certianly help them out there. May be a little on the small side but was very productive in college and similar comments were levelled at some other recent draftees who went on to produce in the pros as well.
Full Profile >>

1.29 New York Giants Kenny Britt WR Rutgers
They'll hope he gives them Plax on the field without giving them Plax off the field
Full Profile >>

1.30 Tennessee Titans Evander Hood DT Missouri
I'm not sure Hood is going to be their pick, the possible trade for Boldin may change their plans depending on who they give up in exchange but for the moment I have to pick someone and they need someone to fill that Haynesworth sized gap.
Full Profile >>

1.31 Arizona Cardinals Beanie Wells RB Ohio State
Again depending on who the player is that goes to Arizona this pick may change but Wells is great value at this point.
Full Profile >>

1.32 Pittsburgh Steelers Eric Wood C Louisville
There's so many rumours about this being the pick I almost feel obliged to put it in. Even though I think it wouldn't be good value, it would be a very Steelerslike pick because he's a good fit for the team and the work ethic they have.
